Industry 4.0 is the fourth industrial revolution!

The first industrial revolution began in 1784 with Edmund Cartwright’s invention of the first mechanical loom and is characterized by steam and water powered manufacturing.

The second industrial revolution began in 1870 with the first mass production assembly line, used by the Swift Meatpacking Plant, and is characterized by electrical power.

The third industrial revolution began in 1969 with Bedford Associates’ first programmable logic control (PLC) and is characterized by the introduction of automated production using PLCs, IT systems, and robotics.

The fourth industrial revolution began in the 21st century with the use of Cyber Physical Systems and is characterized by “Smart Machines” with artificial intelligence and big data capabilities, and the interoperability of IoT and cloud technology.
